(Hong Kong, 11 March 2012) In recognition of its outstanding safety performance for the “MTR West Island Line Contract No. 701 – Modification of Sheung Wan Station”, Sun Fook Kong has been granted the “Gold Prize in the category of Renovation and Maintenance Works” of the Construction Industry Safety Award Scheme 2011 / 2012.

The Construction Industry Safety Award Scheme is organized by the Hong Kong Labour Department in collaboration with 12 co-organizers including the Occupational Safety and Health Council, the Development Bureau, the Hong Kong Housing Authority and the Construction Industry Council to foster a safety culture in the construction sector and to enhance safety awareness among managerial levels and frontline workers. “To prevent accidents, the management should consider health and safety factors in project planning, management and work procedure. Besides, workers should use PPEs in a proper way and remain sensitive to ensure their safety,” said Mr. Cheuk Wing Hing, JP, Commissioner for Labour, during the opening speech.

The competition assessment had been conducted in two phases. In the preliminary assessment, Occupational Safety Officers of the Labour Department had carried out physical site assessment to evaluate the safety and health conditions of the construction sites. Then, the final assessment had been conducted by an assessment team comprising representatives from all organizers, with the Labour Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Council as core members to access both the physical site conditions and the safety management system.

Sun Fook Kong commenced the “MTR West Island Line Contract No. 701 – Modification of Sheung Wan Station” in April, 2010. To transform the Sheung Wan Station from a terminus to an intermediate station, the scope of work includes installation of new rail tracks and overhead power lines, new passenger lifts, enlargement of the East Concourse and improvement works to the station facilities. Recently, it has been given a number of safety and environmental awards by the MTR Corporation Limited and the good cooperation between managerial levels, workers and the sub-contractors has led to its satisfactory project performance on safety and site cleanliness.

In future, Sun Fook Kong will continue to enhance its safety culture and to promote safety for the construction industry, hoping that all workers can work in a safe and comfortable environment and “zero accident” can be resulted.
